I’m finally at the point of rendering and burning my big (18+ hours)8mm conversion project. To get the right flow some of my DVDs are longer than others.

I’ve read all of the topics about adjusting bitrates, bitrate calculators, etc that have been posted on the forum. I think I have a good understanding of the topic and there are a few of my DVDs that will need to be customized.

But when I click on Render As and get the dialog box the Custom button is grayed out and inactive. I’m using Vegas Movie Studio 8 Platinum and the help files talk about using this custom option with this program so it should be available.

I’ve looked under the Properties dialog, I’ve searched the Help files, but I can’t find anything about activating/deactivating this button. Can anyone help me fix this?

If I remember correctly, Vegas Movie Studio doesn’t offer this option which is why it’s grayed out.
Unfortunately the manual doesn’t make this clear either.

    Mike,

Thanks for the help. Here what the program Help files say in VMS Platinum:

If the selected file type supports it, the Render As dialog allows you to create custom templates for saving files.

Of course, there is no mention that I can find that tells the user what file type allows custom templates. I’ve tried all of the listed ones and none activate the Custom button.

    1. Use the Render As dialog to specify a location and name for the file you want to save.

    2. Click the Custom button to open the Custom Template dialog.

    3. Choose a template from the Template drop-down list, or enter a new name in the edit box.

    * Built-in presets cannot be edited.

    * When determining bit rates, 1K=1024.

    4. Use the Custom Template dialog to set the template’s properties.

Since it says built in presets cannot be edited I tried changing a parameter to get custom properties instead of a preset, but even then the Custom button is grayed out after selecting Render As.

So, it appears that you may be right that this function is unavailable in Movie Studio Platinum. I’ll either have to do some rejuggling or buy the Pro version.
