Gearshift, m2t, cineform
I’m a little confused here about the science of generation loss. I’ve asked in a few places and read plenty of forum posts, but I still don’t
completely understand the nature of how the m2t functions on a timeline.I’ve edited m2t’s in the past with small projects and it’s been fine. Now I’m editing something larger and everything’s slowing down, I might purchase the gearshift proxy from vasst.
I have a couple of issues:
1) If i am editing with m2t files and I add effects, transitions etc, then over a period of time remove the effects, put new ones on, color correct etc, am I losing quality of the original m2t capture files? Are each of these changes generational changes? or is it only when I actually render that I lose quality?
2) Not wanting to lose quality, I decided to replace the m2t files with the cineform intermediates. Of course these are huge files, taking up plenty of HDD, and much harder to edit in real time than the m2t files. It seems to be unanomous on forums that AVI files are easier to edit. I don’t find this the case at all. Any ideas why?
3) using proxies in gearshift seems to be the best way to edit HDV. I have a trial version, but I can’t figure out how to replace m2t files with PAL DV but without getting the cineform files and the GSP files thrown in.
The system I am running is Vegas 7 on windows XP 2.66 duo core processor, 4GB RAM, 1.7TB of storage.
