So I’m running AE on a new mac, 8 core 3.0 processor, with 4gb ram(not ideal, i know)
and when I run nucleo(2.0) bg render or commit to disk, it stalls my computer so much that I can’t even run the internet. I changed the settings to use only 1/2 ram and 1/2 the cpu’s, but still, it stalls very badly, and is not even using the full capabilities of the multiprocessor. (activity monitor) I have 1gb allocated to each processor, and 2gb to leave for other applications. Any ideas on why this is happening? Are the settings in Nucleo independent from AE, or does it use AE settings? I’ve double checked everything and it should be running fine.

if you wan to run other apps while rendering, and, since you have only 4gb of ram, try disabling nucleo and ae’s multiprocessing.

some effects in ae are multithreaded and will still take advantage of multiple cores, but ae won’t be greedy with your ram and should leave a good 1gb for other apps.

if you want speed and stability, i wouldn’t run other apps while using ae and i would limit the number of cores for rendering to a max of 4 (2 might be better)… i’ve heard nucleo pro is supposed to be better at managing limited ram for renders, but i still think you should try to limit the number of cores (i don’t have nucleo so i’m not sure how to do that).

also, if you can have a different limit for background rendering, i’d set that to 1 core. this will leave more ram for you to work with for foreground processes…

lastly… try to buy more ram when you can. i think you can get 2x2gb sticks (12gb) for under $300. combine that with your 4gb and you have 16gb (unless you have 4x1gb sticks currently).

checkout otherworldcomputing.com for good prices on mac ram.

Well, unfortunately, we are not all blessed like you and can afford multiple computers, or to just not use the computer for a few hours while rendering is going. Secondly, rendering in the background while working with different applications, and even continuing to work in AE, has been around for a while now since BGrender. We all can’t afford to lose the productivity loss of AE stalling while rendering. Thirdly, I think your response was a bit rude, and ungrounded. You can look into AEscripts.com to find BGrender and all kinds of other helpful scripts, and perhaps some can help you improve your worktime.

Thanks Kevin, I will definitely take you up on the configurations. I have been looking for a safe way to render in the background while still being able to work, and the above configuration sounds hopeful. I have pretty much given up on nucleo, and am using the simple BGrender script, which seems to work better.

    Thanks again!
