  • Problems with Rendering transparent background in VEGAS 9.0

Posted by Scott Gallagher on September 29, 2008 at 11:04 pm

    Using Sony Vegas 9.0.
Footage was shot with a green screen.
Chroma Keyed out the the green screen, leaving image of taling person nice and clear.
I can add any background I want and it looks great in vegas.

    PROBLEM is while Rendering.

I read, read and read. I believe I’m doing everything right.
I render as AVI. On the custom tab / video, the format is ‘uncompressed’ and both the Alpha Channel and OpenDML boxes are checked. I have no Field Order and using a 480×360 fram size.

After rendering, to verify if there is a transparent background, I bring back into Vegas and drop a background, and no go. No transparent background.

HELP, PLEASE! I’m missing one small thing…

This is copied from the description, if it helps
Audio: 44,100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
    Video: 29.970 fps, 480x360x32

You need to make Vegas recognise the alpha channel. right click on the video in your project media tab, at the bottom of the media tab, drop the alpha channel dropdown and try the straight (unmatted)
that works best for me. This is with Vegas pro but should work with your program too. Hope this helps Danny Hays

Also you do not have to render uncompressed. The Quicktime Animation codec will render 32-bit with alpha channel and will result in much smaller files. (and for future reference so you don’t confuse people, you have Movie Studio 9… Vegas 9 doesn’t exist yet)
