Vegas question
I am new to Vegas Movie Studio Platinum, in fact new to editing in general. I have spent days reading through a lot of the post and have found a wealth of infomation (Thank you for that ) and have done some projects that look ok. My problem is I am not sure I completely understand a few things so here goes.
1. I have a Canon HV30 (Love it) when saving to DVD (or to my hard drive) for viewing on other computers as a file, what setting should I use to save the HD file as to get the best playback quality? I think it would be .AVI but not sure what setting to render it to.
2. When making a DVD, I think I understand that you would use NTSC DVD widescreen to get the best possible DVD (Other then blue ray if I had one) is that correct?

That’s a really good question because there are a lot of formats you could render to. The first I would worry about is archival quality because some day you will get a Blu-ray burner and you will want to create an HD version and for that, I would render a copy to the original HDV M2T format of your camera. That would be MainConcept MPEG-2 using the HDV 1080-60i template. The file can be dropped right into DVD Architect and burned to Blu-ray without any further rendering.
Unfortunately, not all computers are powerful enough to playback a 25MBps MPEG-2 stream smoothly so you might not want to give that to others for PC viewing. For that you could save it as AVC MP4 file, Windows Media WMV file, or Quicktime MOV file. There is very little difference in quality between these at the same bitrate and most people will be able to play these on their computers. You might also consider rendering a 1280x720p version which will playback even more smoothly on most PC’s.
I don’t have Movie Studio so I can’t tell you which templates to use as the Vegas Pro version has a wider selection of templates. I would try a few types that I mentioned and see what you think and how well your PC plays them back. Just select a template that is 1440×1080 because that is the resolution of your original footage.

That’s correct. I regularly render my HDV projects to NTSC DVD Widescreen and they look great.
