Render movies with a transparent backgrounds (how to)
Hi guys,
I did a composition with some particles on a transparent background. I then rendered the composition to a Quick Time movie. However, when importing the same Quick Time movie to a new composition the transperent background was replaced by a black background. How can I renderer something, preserving the transperent background (like the text layers), so I can mix it with other images (like we do when converting an image to a gift file)?

Are you sure you’re not sut seeing black because nothing’s there? Hit the alpha-only switch on the viewer to see if the alpha is really there.
You must have the alpha channel active in the rendering settings and you must properly interpret the alpha when importing. It’s all in the manuals and help system but not exactly easy to find. Proprely rendering and interpreting alphas are two issues we see around often. You might check the AE Basics forum for additional assistance in how to figure this out.

Anyway, I’m not sure I understood, however I have some comercial footage shot with a green screen in Quicktime files, and when I import them (with file import)there is no black background, when I clik on “toggle transparency grid” And this doesn’t happens when I render my files. There is, In my composition there is no black background. I render the file to Wuicktime. Then I import them back to the same comp, and it’s not transparant anymore (it is the same result when you don’t save a Image to Gif file. The transparancy is replaced by black). Am I missing some option on the render process?

Yes, you have failed to throughly research how to use and then to activate the alpha setting. It is millions of colors+, the plus sign (+) is the alpha channel.
You must first use a codec that supports alpha. I only use Animation.Look it up in the manual. You will get your answer faster than asking us to explain it to you.

Sorry to ask, but I’m not English and most of the manuals are in Englsh. I also am a newby to After Effects. I’m not a Pro (I really don’t know what is the Alpha Channel anyway ). I thought it was only a matter of checking something (such as “preserve transparency”) in the rendering process.

Yes, I thought so. It’s our conceit as Americans that we (most of us) do not understand more than one language. But you should be able to obtain most of the manuals and help system files in other languages.

I was having this same problem and it seems everyone just told the guy to read the manual. So – if you too have this problem, when you go to render the composition, under Output Module click “Lossless”,
Under Video Output under Channels, choose RGB + Alpha. it works!File not found – Bad serial number – the problem could be this, that or the other…
