poor video quality… urgent
Hello,
I created a demo of my website using a desktop recorder but noticed the audio quality was poor, so I opened up the avi file in Sony Vegas, took the audio into Cool Edit to amplify it, and rendered the finished product. However, the video quality has gone down significantly and it’s very difficult to even make out the text in the video now.
All I did was open up the AVI file in Sony Vegas, I didn’t set any settings.
Any help would be appreciated. I have to send this video out urgently.

You apparently rerendered the file when you took it back to Vegas. What type of .avi file are you using DV, Divx, etc?

I’m using Desktop Activity Recorder to record the video… it used a Microsoft Video 1 compressor (dunno what that is) but other options are Divx 6.8 Codec, etc. so I’m assuming whatever that is is how the video was originally created…
i’m rendering the file in Sony Vegas after changing the audio track using the NTSC DV template.
I don’t really know much more about video editing than this. I hope I’ve provided the necessary info lol

It sounds like you accidentally re-rendered the video file as well as th eaudio file when you were rendering it in Cool Edit. -
When you rerender a lossy codec to a lossy codec you get a really poor quality result. You might not notice it so much in the audio but the video will suck.

The NTSC DV template may be contributing to the unreadable text. What was your original recorded resolution? Does the originally recorded video look OK? Do you have to deliver this for TV viewing or PC/web viewing? If you are delivering PC/web don’t use DV because it will interlace your progressive capture. Try using one of the AVC/MP4 templates instead.
BTW, there is a reason that people buy Camtasia for this kind of work. Doing it yourself with free tools requires a lot of knowledge about codecs and resolutions and a lot of time to experiment. You might consider buying Camtasia to do this kind of work. You will get much better results.
If you don’t want to spend money, you should be doing your recording to a lossless codec in a resolution that is a multiple of the final output format.
