I have rendered a project in HD, 1920×1080. I have previewed it on an HD TV and it looked fine. In the preview window of Vegas there are two rectangles which are the safe areas. My project is outside the smaller of the two and inside the bigger one.

I have rendered it and previewed it on an HDTV and it looked fine.

My client however, has said that there are certain elements that are cut off, “they look like they’ve been cut in half.” I’m guessing it is the safe ares.

Could someone please explain why it looks fine on one HDTV and different on (what I assume they are watching it on) another HDTV?

    Many thanks,
    Herman

From what you have described…you have handled your edits correctly,
by previewing your HD content on a HDTV, both from vegas and then
    the finished rendered product.
Not going ouside the safe area (bigger box)is ok. The smaller box
is the title safe area, where titles should not extend outside this
    area.
Therefore i can assume your clients are not viewing your content
on the proper medium…..Since they complained, get full detail as to
how and what they are using to watch it.

I just want to make sure I’m understanding you correctly…

Title Safe Area, should all video, text, graphics of any kind stay within the smaller box? Some of mine wasn’t.

    Thank you for your help!

Just your Text, Graphics, lower thirds etc, should remain within this smaller box. Try to let anything you want to be viewed in full,
remain within this area to be on the safe side.

Yes, it’s frustrating for us editors but the fact of the matter is that every television (HD or otherwise) is going to be slightly different. The title safe areas are designed so that if something is within them, anyone with any tv is going to see that part of the image. That being said, there are people who might view a project on some monitor or projector that overscans, and can see everything to the edge of the frame. I wouldn’t create the project so that there’s nothing but black space around the edge of the action safe areas, because lots of people could see that and it’s jarring. The trick is to fill the whole frame, but fill the edges with stuff that won’t matter if some people can’t see it. Something that really has to be done while shooting the footage rather than afterward.
