I once had the real pleasure of watching the Sony Vegas god Tim Duncan work on his system for a couple of hours. I came away thinking this guy is a real genius. One little thing that he had done to his setup was that Sony Vegas GUI had more of the typical “dark charcoal” appearance as opposed to the light gray backgrounds that Vegas normally works with. In the display preferences we only have options for changing the track, envelope and snap colors. But nothing for the the overall background of the GUI. I figured Tim must have made the adjusment on a registry level and wondered if anyone out there knows this trick. I much prefer the charcoal gui to the light gray.

    Got you Erik,
The ‘Dark charcoal editing theme look‘….lol.
Yeah, i know what you mean, i also love that look, and
right now my entire editing applications all have this charcoal
theme running through, including Vegas….But as you realise there
is no option in vegas to create this.
So, what i do and would recommend is installing a “windows theme”.
You can google for themes, and when you find the right one, you
download and save to your computer. Then right click on your desktop
and go to properties, then install this theme under ‘Themes’.
You can then personalize further under the ‘Appearance tab’.

    Hey Steve,
Interesting approach using the windows theme. I did some playing around and did improve my situation thanks to your suggestion. However, I do find the “global” application of the darker color scheme not satisfying. Especially in windows explorer it seems to bug me. Thanks for the idea though and hopefully someone will have a registry hack for Sony Vegas.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I found a pretty good solution that is very similar to what steve suggested. I found that if you go Display Properties>Appearance>Advanced>Item>3D Objects you can set the color scheme for the Sony Vegas BG color and the text on top of it by adjusting the “window” setting. Works pretty good give it a try as it doesn’t affect the view of windows explorer and other apps.
