  need affordable camera 4 Green Screen

  I have a client who wants to shoot his own green screen footage, and he’s asking me to advise him on green screen and camera set up. He has the tripod. I’ve figured out the green screen. I was wondering if anybody could suggest a camera that is high quality enough to get a decent key with? He wants to spend as little as possible, big surprise I know. I’ll be keying in Keylight in AE CS4.

  I’ve had good results with Panasonic’s HVX. But the number 1 thing that is going to make or break your greenscreen footage is going to be your lighting. If its not properly lit, its not going to matter what kind of camera you shot it on. But, like I said, I’ve had good results with the HVX.

  I concur on the Panasonic HVX200 recommendation. Here’s just a few reasons:

  – Shoots in a variety of formats, including DVCPRO 50 and multiple HD formats via DVCPRO HD. Avoid DV like the plague.

  – The above shooting formats (not found on most affordable cameras) offer 4:2:2 chroma subsampling. In a nutshell, 4:2:2 means better detail in the individual color channels, which is crucial for good keys. The DV format uses 4:1:1 subsampling, which means half the color subsampling, and much more difficult keying.

  – Recording to P2 solid state cards means no more tapes, fast file transfers to edit, and easy backup/archive. The cards are somewhat expensive but worth it.
