  AVI files

  Hey guys,

  I’m new to HD. I want to capture footage from my V1U using Vegas 8.

  I notice it captures in Mpeg 2 format. Is there any way to capture in AVI? Is there any benefit in doing this?

  The reason I ask is because I am used to capturing my DVD footage in AVI.

  HDV is mpeg, not avi. Now, with that said, you can buy Cineform and capture as avi files, but they will take up more space than mpeg and you will not have the benefit of not recompressing the files if you do not add any fx to them (Vegas pro 8 only). If you are going to encode multiple generations of the files, it may be of benefit for you to utilize Cineform.

  There is also a couple of programs by VASST that allow you to change the files to a different type and then switch them back before you encode. The benefit in this is that it allows for faster editing if you have a slow machine that is having difficulty editing HDV. There is Ultimate S Pro and Gearshift.

  So for my purposes it’s best to stick with MPEG2. If I decide to used Adobe Premiere in the future would the files work with them as well?

  I assume you mean by “those files” m2t files. Seeing how mpeg is the spec for HDV I don’t see why they wouldn’t. Of course, I have not used premiere in a really long time so I do not have an informed opinion on the matter.
