  • Why can’t Sony Vegas 8 render .mp4 files?

Posted by Chris Mcguinness on April 16, 2008 at 2:13 pm

Hi, I would like to render as h.264 .mp4 files directly from vegas.

However when I select file > render as,

    the only containers available are:

    .aa3
    .aif
    .flac
    .mp3
    .ogg
    .mov
    .rm
    .wav
    .pca
    .w64
    .avi
    .wav
    .wma
    .wmv

I’ve looked through the custom settings of every file extension and could not find mpeg, mp4, mainconcept, or any similar codecs.

I have quicktime 7 installed. Is there a plugin I need to install? Or am I looking in the wrong place? Or is it just impossible to render .mp4s in vegas?

Otherwise can someone please recommend a format which I could export to and then convert to .mp4 without loss of quality?

    Thanks….

    Chris

Probably point 2b in this link will be helpful to you:

Mine has MP4 under both MainConcept and Sony renderers. Are you talking Vegas PRO 8? Or Vegas MOVE STUDIO? That could be a difference as well.

Yes…thanks for responding but I already understand that I need to use Mainconcept. However there is no such option –

    I’m using 8.0a build 179

    I will try 8.0b.

I’m running Vegas Movie Studio Platinum and I have the option to use Main Concept or Sony to render an .mp4 file but niether of them let me render and standard frame size (720 x 480) or larger (my master file is 1440 X 1080). Is there anyway to export a larger .mp4 file?

In a related issue I am unable to import any of the .mp4 files I created with After Effects CS3. If anyone can help me to figure this out that would be great.
