After 11 years of being in production roles, and having moved half way round the world it’s about time I got my feet wet in basic post.

More out of income generating necessity and convenience than a true calling to cutting – but I need to learn to edit, and have a system at home that I can use.

I’ve picked Vegas as my starting point, economic and fast to pick up – and can generate quality end results that will pass through clients varied quality tests (does it look OK to me on my TV/comp monitor?).

The projects needing the most resources will be shot HDV, pulling footage in via fire wire from the cam, output DVD (HD DVD/Blue Ray can come later), and be up to 45 min cut length. Which will mean about 10 source footage tapes as a max per project.

My question is – what box / monitor do I need to run Vegas comfortably? I’d like to be able to colour correct to a small degree – but I’m not an AE or effects junkie, and am happy to leave that stuff up to the guys who can.

My intention is to build it myself, so any advice on parts would be welcome, especially if it’s of the “don’t get this type, it’s too slow”.

Will my world explode if I run office type software on the same box? Something has to take up the slack time between projects too – so you know, the odd game would be nice too.

    Thanks

    Gav

    Hi Gav,

Welcome to the Vegas editing community.

[Gav Bott] “My question is – what box / monitor do I need to run Vegas comfortably?”

Since Vegas uses your host computer for it’s processing power
the faster your computer the better performance you will get out of Vegas. Since you are going to be editing some HDV I would suggest at least a fast dual core rig. Of course the faster the better. No need to spend big bucks on graphics card since it does not speed things up at all.
You might also take a look at Blackmagic Designs. They make some great high end cards for Componet,SDI, and HDMI inputs if you need that type of thing.

Also pack a good deal of RAM on your system. 2 gig minimum.

    Regards, Rick.

    Thanks Rick,

A fast dual core and 2gig+ ram – couldn’t be clearer, or cheaper!
