Has anyone successfully created a 360º canvas that they display in 360º? We are creating a five projector curler that will display in 360º if you are standing in the middle. The idea is to create a camera rig in After Effects that will be as if you could see all around while you move through 3D space.

So far we have tried different iterations of eight and nine camera versions all tied to a null. We have tried blending and using some filters like CC Lens. Not quite at the place that I would like to be.

You can see what I am talking about here (previsualized thanks to CC Cylinder):

If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them.

The only time I attempted anything like this, I quickly found the I need to have the 3D camera’s FOV match the projector’s ‘FOV’. If you have 5 projectors, I would have thought you’d need your AE cameras to have 360/5 = 72o FOV. At a guess

But we also ran into problems of synchronising the videos. An installation I visited used individual mini-Macs (one to each projector) controlled by a single Mini-Mac, but being a PC head, that’s as much info as I got. We went with an approach of an extended desktop, but getting the video compression right was difficult.

If you do get this solved, I’d love to see the finished results and your solution.

    Good luck

I have a couple ideas – but before I try it, could you tell me the expected orientation and FOV of the screens? Is it 5 horizontal 4×3’s, Vertical 3:4’s or something else?
