Has anybody here installed the Vegas Pro 8 upgrade? If so, does it ask for the older version serial number, does it require to put the older CD in the drive, or does the previous version have to be installed before installing the upgrade? And finally, is the upgrade version exactly the same in functionality and features?

I’m asking because there’s a place that is still selling version 6, but it doesn’t come with box or manuals, which tells me it might be an OEM version. I assume it comes with its own serial number, but I don’t know for sure until they reply to my email. If it does, then I might go that route because it would be far cheaper than spending the $480 the full version costs, but I want to make sure I don’t miss on any features or that I don’t run into problems.

Each version of Vegas is a new installation and does not require the old version to be installed or deleted. Each has its own serial number.

OK, but how does the upgrade version verify that you have the older version? Does it make you insert the installation CD for the older version, or does it make you type in the serial number from the older version?

Sony knows by the fact that you register your software with them.

So basically if I buy both version 6 and the 8 upgrade at the same time I would have to register the serial number that comes with version 6 at the Sony website and then install version 8, right?

I’m assuming you’re talking about the B&H versions. There has been a lot of talk about going this route. It will work (yes, you’ll get the serial number for Vegas 6 even though it’s not “boxed”). However, some have indicated that Vegas 6 needs to be installed before the Vegas 8 upgrade will be accepted.

Generally speaking, Vegas upgrades have NOT required previous versions to be installed on the machine you’re now using. All you need is the serial number.

Perhaps if you get both of them, you can try installing ONLY Vegas 8 and let us know if Vegas 6 must be installed before it’s accepted.

Indeed, I’m talking about the B&H version. They confirmed to me by email that while not boxed, it does come with its unique serial number. Since version 6 plus the Pro 8 upgrade is much cheaper than the full version, it’s a no brainer, but I want to make sure that it’s legal and that it will work just as well as the full version.

It is legal and you will end up with the full version.

OK, I did this with the Vegas 6 OEM from B&H back in version at version 7. I had bought the version 6 from B&H and then I contacted Sony for the free upgrade. I did get it, however, after I was accepted (the next day as a matter of fact), here is what appereared on Sony’s website.

Not sure if purchasing the upgrade will be any different. There was also a discussion about that it this thread.

OK, but I’m not talking about that kind of upgrade. I’m talking about purchasing the version 6 that B&H is selling and also purchasing Vegas Pro 8 upgrade, which together would be $180, about $300 than Vegas Pro 8 full version. As long as it’s legal (andI don’t see why it wouldn’t be) it’s a heck of a deal, even if you have to install version 6 first.

My point is that Vegas 8 includes DVD Architect. Vegas 6 OEM does not. Not sure if it will be considered an upgrade path. You should get your answer from Sony soon enough in any case. Hope for the best!
