8 & Vista
Posted by Randall Raymond on October 12, 2007 at 6:14 pmI still haven’t changed from Windows xp Pro to Vista – am I missing anything substantial in regards to V8 (other than the Vista whizzbangs)?

October 12, 2007 at 7:16 pmJust a side annecdote about Vista. We have a demo system here that was just barely able to run Vista in all it’s dubious glory. It really crawled along.
I turned off all the whizbang stuff so that it now looks like Win2k and it’s now quite spritely. I highly recommend you turn off all that junk if you’ve got Vista.

October 12, 2007 at 8:25 pmEarlier we heard of a 64bit version of Version 8 to go along with Vista 64. Any news or comments?

October 12, 2007 at 8:42 pmI get the impression it’s supposed to go into beta by the end of this year.

October 14, 2007 at 10:23 pmI am considering buying a laptop with Vista on it and would like to run Vegas 8. Have you had any experience with running 8 on a laptop with Vista — in other words am I asking too much of a laptop? It has 2GB RAM and a 200GB Hard Drive. Also, you’re not the first person I’ve heard say that some of Vista’s bells and whistles just get in the way. Can you elaborate on what should/could be turned off?
thanks!

October 15, 2007 at 12:47 amI have not run Vegas on Vista, let alone a laptop, but I wouldn’t be afraid to do so. Still, if I could get a laptop with XP I’d choose that over Vista.
You should ask the vendor if you can get the system with Windows XP. Microsoft has loosened up on its insistence that vendors bundle Vista with their systems. If the vendor says no then either look at their business laptops or look at another vendor. For instance, I know HP has been selling their business laptops with XP all along, and these come with a lot less junk software than the home models.
The one thing I might be looking for in a laptop is an ExpressCard slot, because it’s newer technology and more forward-looking than a PCMCIA slot . This may make no difference for you but the ExpressCard slot should support the upcoming Sony XDCAM EX.
Okay, I say I wouldn’t be afraid of running Vegas on Vista, but I’d avoid it if I could. Not a ringing endorsement. The thing about Vista is that it uses a newer graphics driver model that scavenges system memory even if you use a discrete graphics card. So it’ll dig into your 2GB of system memory.
You can simplify the Vista interface and this should help a lot. Basically you do the same things you’d do to XP – change to a Windows Classic theme, turn off all the screen effects, etc, etc. You can probably find all these tips on the web, they’re some of the same tips given for XP a few years ago, but they seem to have a much more drastic effect on Vista.

October 15, 2007 at 6:39 amI installed v8 on Vista Business – was self install, so completely clean. Bought laptop without OS.
2.4ghz, 2GB, Nvidia 8600 GT 512MB, 1680 x 1050, 160GB 7200rpm – Zepto 6625WD.
so far have been running vista smoothly, with aero / the whole works. Will turn it off someday, but am enjoying the visuals for the mo. 😉 But am not editing HDV right now.
on multitrack project, with main track having FX applied(glow, gradient, film fx), still runs smoothly.

October 15, 2007 at 8:11 pmI thought the whiz bang stuff was kind of nice, except for the learning curve of finding things, but this marginal system definitely perked up after turning all this extra chrome off.
