Vegas
Hello all,
I have been out of the scene for about a year however I want to get back into full time editing. The latest version of Vegas that I used was 6.0d. All my editing buddies are telling me to forget Vegas and move to Final Cut or Premier. Because I have a working knowledge of Vegas, I do not want to try and learn something new. Here is my question; Can Vegas compare to those other software applications? I mean, are there benefits to switching? What can other applications do that Vegas can’t?
I realize that this may be a vague question but I just want to be reassured that I can produce great videos with great effects and animated menu’s (Architech).
One other question, to become a power/pro Vegas user, what do you suggest in terms of training material?

Yes, you can produce wonderful pieces of work with Vegas, many people do it every day, content from Vegas is broadcast and/or distributed on DVD every day.
Depending on what you’re doing, Vegas is equal to and/or superior to FCP or Premiere. These apps also have their strong points over Vegas. Frankly, all the NLE’s today are great, and it boils down to the very question you’ve asked; “What app do you know?”As far as training, there is this website, Ed Troxel’s newsletters, and VASST.

You have to realize that Apple spends a lot of money on advertising. Sony does not really promote Vegas very aggressively. Every second “expert” on the street will say use FCP even though most have not even tried it, or tried Vegas for that matter. I’ve tried both Vegas/Premiere/FCP and so far, Vegas does it for me!

For many task I would rather work in Vegas than FCP or Premiere. FCP does have some nice bling fast, and premiere intergrates well with After Effects. Can you do some really slick stuff in Vegas, (heck yea). As far as I’m concerned Vegas has the best audio toolset of any NLE and boy can you cut somthing fast on it.

Just think about it this way.
Is Vegas at its price point meeting your needs?
Are you missing anything you need to finish a job?
Do you want to buy new hardware?With the 32bit pipeline now has Vegas enough color
space for the any color editor. Even animators can
render and not suffer from color gradient issues.So since the video quality I to O is no longer at issue
and you can cut the video add effects, edit the audio,
etc. and playback on about any machine on the planet
(which is something I really love about Vegas) what is it
you need?FYI I am a plugin developer and would be really interested in
this answer 🙂
I am moving from another application to Vegas.So fire away what are you missing to finish a job?

Sorry just reread the post again and wanted to add this.
Animated titles? There is a new title animation program
in Vegas not as good as LiveType but good enough.As far as effects you have to be very specific.
As you know there applications you can purcahse to
do anything you want on the PC same as on the Mac.
So.. you can always ammend your suite of tools with something
of your choosing and get handed something.With such a low cost of entry Vegas offers you have a pretty good size budget before you reach the cost of FCP2 and the
8 core Mac you would need to run it.Bob
