I currently own a Canon GL1, a Canon GL2 and a Sony VX2100. I have been using Maxell Mini DV tapes for years, in all 3 cameras. I buy them at Sam’s club for $19.87 for an 8 pack. Lately I have been concerned about the quality of these tapes. They still seem to work OK, but I’ve had to take my Sony in to have the heads cleaned and adjustments made, twice in the last 2 months. The tech was saying that he is not a fan of Maxell tapes and prefers JVC or Sony tapes. I have researched “the COW” and have decided that I will be using Sony tapes in the Sony camera from now on.

First question, is it worth paying the extra dollars for the Sony HD or Excellence tapes instead of the Premium?

Second question, where is the best place to buy the Sony tapes?

Third question, I am scheduled to take the Canon cameras in soon for their cleanings. Would this be a good time to switch the Canons over to Sony tapes? I currently use the GL1 camera whenever I archive a project by printing to DV tape. If I switch all cameras over to Sony tapes and have to go back to an old project, how is putting the old Maxell tape into the GL1 for capture going to affect the camera, knowing it is not good to switch back and forth on tape brands?

Sorry for such a long post.

I have been using Panasonic DV tapes for about 8 Years. The cheapest one works even for HDV. Appearently, the coating on Panasonics is such that it prevents head clogging.
Rarely have had dirthy heads, when I do I clean heads with Radio Shack cleaning set (solution plus long q-tips).

I, like you, bought some of these Maxell a couple years ago at Sam’s and for the first time had several dropout on my recordings on several tapes. No more Maxell for me. I just use Sony and Panasonic.
