  HDV rendered to HD or HD rendered to HD?

  1920 x 1080i is what I need to output.

  Can I achieve the same quality output by editing with captured HDV files (1440 x 1080), then rendering with Neo-HD 1920 x 1080…

  as opposed to…

  editing with Neo-HD captured files (1920 x 1080), then rendering again with Neo-HD 1920 x 1080?

  My initial experiments tell me that I will get better results by working with the 1920 x 1080 Neo-HD captured files. Some of my HDV (Vegas7) captured files have edge-jaggies, where Neo-HD captured files seem to smooth these edges out. The HDV captured “jaggies” seem to persist, even after rendered out with Neo-HD. However, I may admittedly have something set wrong.

  I hope that this makes sense, but the gist of it is: I would far prefer to edit with the smaller HDV files, then output render into 1920 x 1080s. But, not if there is a quality compromise.

  Has anyone else compared the two outputs?

  Well, I see now that I had my “project settings” set to “upper field”, which created my HDV jaggies. Now, set to “lower field” they are smoothed out.

  Now, I cannot say that I see any significant quality difference between HDV(1440)edit-to-HDrender and HD(1920)edit-to-HDrender. This is good, as I far prefer editing with the smaller HDV(1440) files.

  Does anyone else have any experience/input on what is their preferred route to 1920 x 1080 output?

  If you are outputting for BD or HD DVD, you can choose either AVCHD or MPEG formats.
  If you’re simply rendering to HDV for print-back or for HDD playback, the file will be UFF. HDV is UFF.

  My final output is for eventual HD broadcast, so I purchased Neo-HD, in hopes that its 1920 output can eventually be transferred to HD Cam.

  But, my main question is: Is there a output quality difference whether I edit in HDV(1440) or HD(Neo-HD captured 1920)? In both scenarios, I output render useing Neo-HD. It appears to me that the final product quality will be the same, in both edit scenarios. I am curious if others have experienced the same.

  It, therefore, would seem preferrable to edit with the smaller HDV(1440) files. But, am I wrong about this?
