2 Questions…
Hi, I have two questions, which im sure will have been covered at some point – but ive run a search and returned nothing…
So hopefully somebody will be able to help?!
Question 1:
Is it possible to Overlap two video sequences?
The only way ive been able to do it so far, is to put the 2 sequences on 2 different layers…
Then give Layer 1 a mask that covers the entire viewable area.
Then set the mask layer to 50% opacity.This gives a rather cool ghostly effect (which ill probably use again at some point). but is it possible to get both layers at 100% opacity, so they effectivly “merge” and look like 1 sequence?
Question 2:
Ive read somewhere that this can be done using the Velocity Envelope tools, but there was no description as to HOW to do it…
So, is it possible to “reverse” a sequence?
and then add a “rewind” effect?
Basically, i want the sequence to look as though its being rewound on an old VCR.Any help will be greatly appreciated!

What exactly are you trying to do here? If a video is full screen at 100%, it will cover up whatever is underneath. Perhaps you’re wanting a PIP (where the top video only fills a partial screen?)
There are various masking and other methods of doing that. Look specifically at Track Motion, Pan/Crop, Masking (cookie cutter, bezier masking in Pan/Crop, etc…)

For a velocity envelope, just right-click the event, choose “Envelopes”, and then pick Velocity. It can go to -100% (i.e. full speed backwards). You can also just right-click an event and choose “REVERSE” to make that event go backwards. So, yes, what you’re wanting to do is certainly possible.

1. You cannot have two layers at 100% opacity as the top layer will completely block out the lower track. Anything less than 100% opacity will let varying degrees of the lower track show through. BUT what it sounds like you wanyt is a crossfade transition. To do this you place both events on the same track and overlap one over the other partially. You will then see a diagonal line (more or less) in that overlapped area representing the changes in opacity. You will change from 100% opacity of the first clip to 100% opacity of the second clip through a gradation process. First clip will get less opaque as second clip gets more opaque. This is a cross fade or a dissolve transition.
2. To reverse a clip insert a velocity envelope in the clip (see ‘insert-envelope-velocity) You can take the velocity of the clip to 0 (or a still frame) or even reverse it to play it backwards by right clicking the line of the envelope and placing nodes and then dragging the nodes up and down.

Maybe i didn’t really give a very good explination of what i wanted to achieve with the “overlap”…Say i wanted to record myself having a conversation with myself.
id set the camera up… same position for both shots, i guess?
Record two takes – one for each side of the conversation.
(only, in the second shot, id be in a different position)Now, how do i splice, or overlap, or merge the two recordings together, so that it looks as though im having a conversation with myself?
Hope that makes sense?

Using the Chroma Keying tools isn’t really going to be an option, i dont think!

You want one of the masking options. Then you can set up one piece where it only shows the right side and another where it only shows the left side. Just make sure you don’t cross that line when taping and don’t let that camera move.
Do a search for masking and I think you’ll be able to figure it out.
