  Video Capture Compression Issue

  Hi…

  I’m trying to capture into Vegas using an Osprey 210 capture card. It seems that vegas is only able to capture in an uncompressed format? The files are huge. When I capture off a camera, the data rate is correct (13GB/hr) I assume this is because the camera has already compressed the data?

  I have tried virtual dub, but cant seem to find the exact codec that I need to get the files down. There are a million options also, which doesnt help a relative novice like myself. I have also tried windows media encoder and Windows Movie Maker (only capture to WMV), MainConcept MPEG Encoder (which only captures at 15 frames a second, even though its set at 29.97), and Virtual Dub. This is driving me crazy!!! Thanks.

  Vegas is primarly designed to capture from your computers firewire port. I’m suprised that you are able to capture anything at all in Vegas with it.

  Your choices for capture with Vegas are:
  1)Firewire – directly to and from your camera.
  2)Analog to Firewire Converter such as the Canopus ADVC110.
  3)Decklink Card.

  Now, what you may be able to do is capture with your cards capture application and Vegas may be able to work with at that point. The other hurder here is if Vegs can render out to the codec that your card supports for playout.

  File sizes are quite small in Vegas when capturing
  either DV-Firewire or HDV-firewire.

  If you really want to edit in Vegas I would suggest that you do your captures via firewire.
