What are the essential rules for capturing 8mm film to video? Are there any articles dedicated to this procedure? Thanks, Alf.

Hi,
Either use a filmscanner (quite expensive, but gives the best quality) or project the film, and shoot it with your camcorder.
If you don’t have / can’t afford a film scanner:
I project the film on a piece of white paper (size of A3).
Before you start, set up your camera, so that the focus,
exposure, white balance are set properly MANUALLY.How this is done:
I start the projector without a film, set its focus approximately
by viewing the edges of the bright area.Based on the bright area, I set up the camcorders
whitebalance, and exposure setting.
Set shutter speed set to the lowest available. (1/50 sec or
1/60 if you live in an NTSC country)
For setting the focus you can put a thing into the bright
area, a pencil for.e.g., lean it right jus against the paper you
are projecting to.
Of course you’ll remove it after setting up is done 🙂Don’t use autofocus, auto-anything your camcorder has.
Having the film in the projector you can set up the projectors focus
correctly.
Start the projectors speed from zero, and increase it to the minimum,
that does not cause flicker (you can see on camcorders viewfinder or lcd), that makes sure you take every frame of the film.After everything is fine, rewind the film and start againg,
now starting the camcorder too.Later, whe you have captured the film-video, you can restore the correct speed in vegas, you can apply color-correct if necessary.
Look for old ragtime music (such as Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag, The Entertainer, etc.) and use it as audio 😉
That fits very good for old 8mm films. 😉
