  • How to make ‘mono’ audio ‘stereo’ ?

Posted by Will Standley on May 26, 2007 at 8:03 pm

I seldon do video and still have Vegas 5.0 so thanks for any help here.

I captured a video and it put the audio on a single track… left track I think.

I shot the video with a Sony PD150 using the mic that came mounted on it. I thought I had it set up to record on both audio channels… but I guess not… unless I ‘captured’ it incorrectly to Vegas.

I tried to select & copy the single audio chanel… then paste it into the other but can’t seem to ‘select’ just the left channel to do the copy.

How can I select the audio on only the left (or right) channel and copy it to the opposit chanel so we have sound on both the left and right channels?

    thanks for any help.

Nothing you do will make it truly “stereo”. However, you CAN put it on both channels. Just right-click the audio, pick “Channels” and then either “Left Only” or “Right Only”. “Combine” would also work.

Thanks for the note. You are right. I stated the question incorrectly.

    I should have asked…

How to copy the sound on the Left Channel to the Right Channel. (or vise-versa)

I don’t think we want to ‘combine’ the channels as there may be noise on the right chanel.

We really want to ‘copy’ one channel to the other.

So the ‘same sound’ is on both the left and the right channels.

    Thanks for any additional assitance.

Set the track to either LEFT or RIGHT ONLY whichever you need for the best sound.

Now CNTL C- the track and insert a new track below the first one. CNTL V the copy to the new track. Now you can play-perhap insert an envelope in each track to PAN LEFT and RIGHT (or of course you can adjust the PAN slider in the track headers) Now you would have a pretend stereo sound. Not true stereo of course but…

    Thanks Don.

But, that sounds like I end up with two ‘left’ tracks.

When I look at the audio on the screen (below the video track) I see a left and a right track.

I want to ‘copy’ the left track on to the right track.

I’m not sure your proceedure did that but I will play around with it.

Sorry for all the bother on such a simple problem.

    Thanks guys.

If you copy the left channel and paste it on a new track then use a PAN envelope on both tracks setting 1 full left and 1 full right or anywhere inbetween to suit your taste you will now have a “stereo” sound and if you are just using 1 channel either left or right the sound will center so it’s an equal sound thru the front speakers both left and right.

If you right-click, choose “Channels”, and then “Left Only”, the LEFT channel will now be heard on BOTH channels. Did you try what I suggested?
