new vegas 7.0 user, general HDV/DVD question
Hi, i recently bought a HD camcorder (canon hv20) and shot some footage and am editing it thru vegas 7. I used CapDVHS to import it from the camcorder in .mpg format and the file is approximately 10GB.
I have edited the movie to my liking and want to re-render it to do the following:
1. Re-render it to its highest possible quality to view on my PC. (I have rendering out set to MPG2, under custom it’s set to Best, Image Quality slider set to 31 and everything else set to its default value (HDV 1440×1080 etc). It outputs my edited movie in mpg format and is in very good quality!2. Re-render it to give to my family members in regular DVD format using DVDA 4. Now, is it better to re-render my movie and set the output to something else (what should i set the output to?) Would I still output in mpg2 format without the audio and then re-render w/ just ac3 audio? Or is it better to just drag the rendered mpg from step1 into DVDA and let it do everything? I want the best possible quality to be put on the DVD.
– observation: when i tried to render my movie as .avi it wasn’t full screen and it put black bars on the left/right, so i’m guess it has to be output as mpg2.Thank you very much.
On a side note, when rendering in step 1, vegas seems to hang after a while and shuts down and doesn’t finish the render…this happened 5 times and finally it was able to render it fine. What would be the cause of this? I have a e6600@3.5ghz, 8800gts, 2gig ram…and while rendering my cpu is at 97%.

You should capture using the Vegas internal capture so you are working with the native M2T (HDV) file.
The best bet for viewing on your PC in HD is wmv9 format.
Do a separate Mpeg2 and AC-3 for SD output for your DVD.
You computer may be overheating during render.

thanks for your reply
would wmv give me better quality than mpg2 to view on PC connected to 1080p LCD display?i also made separate mpg2/ac3 to SD DVD (NTSC Widescreen) and burned to DVD…but, when viewing the dvd on a widescreen LCD, i got small black bars on the left and right. There is an option before you start rendering to “Stretch to fit … “, i checked that option and I didn’t have that problem again. Is that the right solution for that?
also, the rendered video for the SD DVD was only about 2gb, so is it possible for me to render at a higher quality or anything? Or are regular DVD players limited what quality/bitrate etc that can be on a normal DVD?
