Upgrading computer for AE – suggestions?
I am upgrading my computer from a AMD 5000+ BE to possibly the Intel Q6600 with 4 gigs of RAM (running under Vista or Win7). With my AMD 5000+BE I cannot utilize motion blur because my system grinds to a halt and it sometimes crashes with an ‘out of memory’ error. So to the quad cores I go – Q6600 or maybe the Q6700. Any suggestions on this setup? How about a motherboard – what should I look for when searching for a decent motherboard?
I am looking to spend around $450.00 all in (I have hard drives, power supply and a case already). -

The Q6600 is a great chip. It’s a stock 2.4Ghz chip, but you can easily overclock it to 3.0Ghz without skipping a beat so for the money it’s a great deal. Just make sure you get a good CPU Fan like the Zerotherm if you plan to overclock it.
As for motherboards, most these days will offer the same basic set of options, just make sure it has multiple SATA ports so that you can add additional internal drives when needed, gets decent reviews with regards to stability, etc. Anything in the $120-$250 range will work fine.
Corsair brand RAM is known for its reliability. I used to pay through the nose for it, but these days RAM is dirt cheap, even Corsair. I wouldn’t get generic or lesser known RAM, especially when using a RAM-hungry app like After Effects.

Thanks for that. I was researching the ASUS P5Q LGA775 (not delux or pro) mobo. It is around $159.00 in Canada and seems like a good deal.
What about memory? Should I go with DDR2 or do I need to up it to DDR3?
