  • Audio drops-out at chapter points

I’ve created a DVD with ac3 and pcm audio tracks. When I watch my finished video everything works perfectly, except that the audio drops-out for a microsecond at the chapter points. This happens in both audio formats. I can watch the receiver and see it change it’s readout, along with the drop-out. The audio and video is generated as complete files for the whole video, not as chapter-length files that are grouped in DVDA, so that doesn’t account for the audio drop-out.

The drop-out doesn’t happen on the computer, nor does it happen on a dvd player with audio connected directly to a tv. It appears to be related to the receiver getting the signal.

I’ve tried de-selecting the “include markers in audio” radio box before rendering, but that didn’t help.

Any ideas would be VERY appreciated. I’m at a complete loss.

Please feel free to speculate with this one! Other than this little glitch I’m ready to take my stuff to the duplicator. I’ve got to sort this out, and any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

[Strunk] “The drop-out doesn’t happen on the computer, nor does it happen on a dvd player with audio connected directly to a tv. It appears to be related to the receiver getting the signal.”

It certainly is a conundrum, but it appears to be only happeining with your receiver. If it plays fine in all other situations, you should be fine.

Tried it on a second system at another house and I had the same issue (1st on a Sony player, then on a liteon). Only at chapter points.

It appears to have something to do with the markers. Or possibly the audio encoder stopped somehow since things tend to go to total silence at that point? Does it encode silence? If so, is there a danger that systems with a receiver attached would shut off the decoding at that point?

Would open GOPs be a factor that would cause strange behavior on the part of the player? I noticed elsewhere that sometimes chapters start strangely with files generated with open GOPs.

Obviously, I’m grasping for an answer, any answer!

    What did you start with?

What did you render to? (i.e. did you create a MPEG2 and separate AC3 files? Did you create an MPEG2 with audio? Did you create an AVI and let DVD A convert it?)

HOW MANY files? (i.e. 1 total, 1 per chapter, etc…)

The straws might be easier to grasp with more info.

The Vegas project video was uncompressed Quicktime. The audio was 48000 (don’t remember the bitrate).

The Vegas video output was rendered on “good” to the dvd architect ntsc setting.

The Vegas audio was rendered to default ac3 set to -31, and to pcm at 48000/16.

DVD architect did not reformat/modify any of the main video or audio files. As an experiment, I removed all the chapter bookmarks and burned it. As expected, there were no pauses at the places where the chapter points previously existed. I then re-added new chapter points, and still had the problem throughout.

Right now, I’m rendering a version with 5.1 ac3 output instead of stereo to see if that is somehow a factor. The default project audio setting is ac3 Any ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Dave

Let me add, the video and audio used in DVDA were 33 minutes each, not rendered chapters that I linked together in DVDA. In other words, one big video file and one big audio file, subdivided into chapters.

Okay, rendering to 5.1 makes no difference. Any thoughts?

With one big file, the presence or absence of chapter points *should* make no difference. Either way they should play straight through.

Do you think I’d have better luck if I upgraded to a newer version? Is there some way to change the behavior of a chapter point? It appears DVDA is encoding the audio differently at the chapter points, somehow. Is there a way to look at the file that indicates where the chapter points fall, so I can see if it’s telling it to do something strange? Could disc medium be a factor? Could having 2 audio tracks instead of one cause this (like it has to check to see which track is active at every chapter, or something).

Anyway, thanks for any additional thoughts, Edward!
