Green Screen/Chroma Key Help
Hello all again,I’m very inexperienced with green screens and we have been trying to use one for our latest movie.We have tried well over 5 times to try to get it to work and each time it doesn’t.Our main issue is getting the lighting right.I was thinking of making a frame and putting a light behind our cheap screen.Can anyone please tell me how we can light this screen properly with the light equipment that we have.Our equipment is a large spotlight and about 3 smaller desk lamps.This movie is very low budget.It is greatly appreciated,thanks!

Given your ‘lighting’ equipment – your best bet is to shoot it outside on a hazy day.

The two articles by Keith Kolbo mentioned are excellent. I would like to add that I use halogen utility lights purchased at Home Depot and diffuser material from B&H photo with excellent results, using only Vegas 6. (A word of caution….don’t follow all the “Rube Goldberg” techniques suggested on the discussion boards to diffuse the lights, and the removal of the protective light grills; that’s what diffuser material was made for.)

I’m constantly amazed at the shorcuts some folks take and their lack of common safety sense.
Safety features were put there for a reason.
So is the using the right tool (such as REAL diffusion material – cost is minimal) for the job. -
Yes Vegas will do it, but as everyone already mentioned, you need good lighting. Halogens are excellent for that purpose! But if you are serious about green screening I suggest two things. Invest in professional green screen. I just bought a large chunk of this stuff https://www.eefx.com and the stuff is beautiful. Extremely well made with a foam backing to eliminate wrinkling. Next invest in Ultra Key, it is the most user-friendly green screening app. out there! It’s perfect for you, because you don’t have good lighting. You click on shadows and wrinkles (with your mouse) and it calculates all the subtle differences in the shades of green for you. Mistake proof!! Not to mention it comes with incredible moving 3D backdrops and JPEGS. Try the demo out at https://www.seriousmagic.com Has to be seen to be believed!! If all this is outside your budget, then evenly lighting your existing green screen, and using Vegas is your best bet.
