  • Vegas version 6 or 7? Audio differences?

Posted by Progfan915 on March 21, 2007 at 12:31 pm

    Hi,

I am totally new to the world of video editing. I am looking into buying Sony Vegas Movie Studio – Platinum. I live in Canada, and currently only version 6 is available. If I want version 7 then I have to order from the US – and pay $20 shipping!

Am I correct that only version 7 will allow you to encode your audio in AC3, rather than just PCM? If so, is this an important feature? My understanding is that it saves a lot of disc space.

I don’t have an HD camcorder, so I won’t be using any of the HD capabilities of version 7.

If it is recommended that I buy version 7, I could just download it from the Sony site. I won’t get the tutorial DVD or extra sound effects DVD, though. Are these useful?

    Thanks a lot!
    Dave

No, you are not correct. AC3 comes with DVD Architect. If you get the version that comes with DVD Architect, you can encode to AC3 whether you’re using Vegas 4, Vegas 5, Vegas 6, or Vegas 7.

Thanks! Vegas 6 comes with DVD Architect 3, whereas Vegas 7 comes with DVD Architect 4. So would both versions of DVD Architect use AC3 encoding?

If so, it sounds like the only advantage to Vegas 7 is the HD capability. Should I just stick with 6, or get 7? If I download version 7, they end up costing about the same.

Sorry to post again…my original reply has not appeared yet.

This is what is confusing me. The following is from the Sony media software website, under the descriptions of Vegas Movie Studio 7:

    Capture/Export/Hardware Features
New! AC3 Stereo and 5.1 encoding

What does this mean? It makes it sound like the older version (Vegas 6/DVD Architect 3) did not do AC3 stereo encoding.

    Thanks!

I think I answered this somewhere else for you, but…

You are confusing Vegas Video and Vegas Movie Studio. Vegas Video has support for AC3 audio if you get DVD Workshop. Movie Studio has some basic support for surround sound.

So, if you want good AC3 support, you need Vegas Video. If you can get by with basic AC3 encoding only, you can get Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition which is at version 8, not 7.

As for shipping cost – there is no shipping cost if you buy from Sony and download the software.

All full versions of DVD Architect have included AC3 encoding. The only versions I know of that did not are the “Movie Studio” versions. The latest “Platinum Movie Studio” added AC3 for that series. I did find the “NEW” statement on this page: https://www.sonymediasoftware.com/products/product.asp?PID=408&PageID=14

However, that page is for the “Movie Studio Platinum” version ($120) – not the full version ($525).

OK, thanks everyone. So it looks like I should get Movie Studio 7, which has basic AC3 encoding, which is probably all that I need. I definitely don’t want the Pro version.

You are still confused about Vegas Video (Vegas/DVD Architect) and Vegas Movie Studio. I am not sure why. Vegas Movie Studio didn’t include any kind of AC3 audio capabilities until version 7 (it is now at version 8). Vegas Video has had it much longer.

Vegas Video – pro version. Has had AC3 capabilities for some time. Latest version is 7.
Vegas Movie Studio – consumer version. Just recently AC3 capabilities. Latest version is 8.

Latest version of Vegas Movie Studio Platinum is 7.0a – not 8.
