AE Render Time
Hi, I am working on a project and I used AE for some graphics. Its a pretty simple 10-20 second graphic which uses a motion blur to give it a look as light rays are shining. There is 1 pre comp, its in 3D, moves from left to right. The text itself has no animation, just the camera. I am using an iMac with a gig of ram. Now I am not an AE user at all, I have used it about three or four times over a period of seven years so I don’t know much about it. I primarly use Maya for almost everything and the question is when I started rendering, AE stated the render time as eleven hrs and some minutes. So, I would like to know is that a usual render time for a 10-20 second graphic? What am I doing wrong? Because I was on a dead line I just did the graphic and animation in Maya, which took about 3-4 minutes. But I would like to use AE because on some future projects I will be doing lot of comp work.

Without knowing everything about your project there’s no way to really know if the render time was typical or the result of you simply not knowing how the render pipeline works. There are many shortcuts and hacks that streamline rendering in AE but 3D with lights, light rays, and motion blur will have an exponential effect on rendering. I’ve never used Maya but it’s probably optimized for OpenGL and has shading routines built into all of its higher functions. AE has no such.

Hi: Thx for the response. As I stated earlier it was suppose to be a simple. It was suppose to be a simple 10-20 second graphic. I used the cc fast blur effect and then a feathred orange background using a solid layer. Both layers were 3D. I did not have the RAM preview on, as I said I only have a gig of RAM. I hope this info might help you to better answer my question. But My main question would be that how long will it take AE to render a 20 second long clip.

You have not provided any information that helps.
The information we need is about the composition, what codec, how big? What are the source layers? Are they video, Photoshop?What codecs and how big are they?3D multiplies rendering by a geometric progressions that is linear in terms of image size. Another iteration of the math is used for each light you have in the scene.
If, for example, your scene was 2D and it rendered in 20 minutes, when you make it into 3D and add a camera , render multiplies by about 1.5 to, say 30-35 minutes. Add 2 lights and activate shadows and you may double that. Add another light and you increase it again. For every filter you add a significant factor especially if you are scaling huge elements way down to fit a project window.bogiesan
