I have a client that is sending video I shot to China. He said they want it on disc in PAL format. I haven’t worked with that before and was wondering….in order to provide it for him, do I go to properties and change from ntsc to PAL for the project, and which PAL, I see there are 4 to choose from (Using Vegas 4.0)I don’t believe they want wide screen, my guess is PAL standard??? Also, If I change the project from ntsc to PAL in properties, do I also need to change template setting from default to vcd pal when I render it as mpeg-1? And last…since putting it in PAL in properties changes the way it appears on preview display, do I then need to check the “stretch video to fill output” button? Thanks.

The project properties only affects the way it is displayed while you are working. This is independant from the rendering template you use.

So, just edit in NTSC as usual, then render to PAL when you want to export.

Thanks Gary. It was good meeting you in Vegas. Thanks for the tips and the Monday seminar was informative too.

I wonder why. They don’t need PAL in China as all their VCD’s will play NTYC.

There’s also a frame rate and picture size difference I think. I’ve never done that in Vegas, but maybe you shold check on these?

That’s a good question. The only difference I see is a smaller screen on playback in media player. My client doesn’t have a clue. He just said his guy in China said PAL works for them, that NTSC does too but PAL is more “friendly” to their system.???

    Go to this site…..

…..and read up on PAL vs NTSC. Then you can make your decision to just do the conversion in Vegas or not.

    Hello Michael,

It’s funny that you memtion China. I just got home from a 3 week trip to China last night. Went to Beijing, Xi’an, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Yichang, 3 day cruise down the Yangtze River, Chongquig, Guilin and Hong Kong, plus a ride on the Maglev train. I took over 2000 pictures and over 11 hours of movies. I was wondering what they use myself in China, is it NTSC or PAL? Reading your message, it sounds like Pal is the more friendly format.

    Hi Ralph

The actual standard in China is PAL. However unlike in the USA where we get ripped off on many things, most all the players and TV’s can play both PAL and NTSC. Here if we want to play PAL stuff here, we got to buy extra equipment.

However! I purchased a portable DVD player some years ago at Best Buy. Mintek I think. My wife (Chinese) gets a lot of DVD’s from friends in PAL format. Those Chinese “Soaps” with 35 or 40 DVD’s They won’t even play on my DVD player I bought in China HA! But we hook up that Mintek and somehow it converts the PAL so she can watch it. I got an old Sony Trinitron 32″ tube TV as well as a brand new Samsung 46″ LCD HDTV we just bought and they all play fine through that portable player. I even got some DVD’s I picked up in China that were PAL format and they also play through that Mintek.

I was asked to send some samples to China for CCTV to review for possible programming and they were able to view them with no problems. My stuff was DVD and MiniDV tape and all in NTSC format.

    Hi Allen,

Thanks for responding because I wanted to thank you for introducing me to the Maglev train from China. When I was on tour I had ask our tour manager about the Maglev Train. He took whoever was interested on the train to the airport and back to the subway station. That was quite an experience and I filmed the whole thing from start to finish. I found China very interesting and the people were very friendly. Now I have to go through over 2000 pictures, 11 hours of film and make a DVD or two on my experiences in traveling through China.

    Thanks Allen,

Thanks Allen for the info. I will check it out. In the meantime I will furnish my video in both PAL and NTSC and they can choose. That way the client, and their client should be happy.
