using the mpeg 2 renders as backup/archive – does audio go with mpeg2?
Hi all, there are some project that I would like to archive in case I need to edit parts of them out for demo. etc.
I just dropped an mpeg 2 file from a recent project in my timeline (vegas 5) and I’m getting the audio file with it. – I was surprised as I had never dropped an mpeg file in a timeline before.
Is this the AC3 file?
Does the mpeg file automatically “tag” it’s ac3 file? or is this mpeg 2 audio?
So, if i want to save this 4 gig file rather than the 8 hours of DVCAM/ AVI files that it came from – is this all I need or should i render the audio from the project as a wave or mp3 top be sure I have it?
Not sure how the AC3 works in combo with the mpeg file as they both come together for DVD’s without having to add the ace file.

The audio you’re getting in the MPEG2 files is MPEG compressed as well. So you’re looking at compressed video and compressed audio. When you go to edit this, both the video AND audio must be decompressed and the recompressed into your final format.
You’ll have higher quality if you archive as DV instead (or, if you’re using HDV, as HDV-Cineform AVI files). Then you can re-edit as needed without the quality hit you’ll see starting from the MPEG2 files. Yes, the original files are larger but you’ll be maintaining quality.

I assume you mean to render my archive back out as an AVI file? sorry to be so stupid !
