  • Slow motion with velocity vs playback speed – velocity has strange results

Posted by Wayne Grauel on July 26, 2006 at 4:09 pm

Typically I have always done slow motion with Ctrl-drag playback speed. Using this method I can always select the clips later and trim as desired. When using velocity and especially trying to do a series of clips in Excalibur, the option is for Velocity – not playback speed.

This presents problems when you try and go back and trim the clips to tighten up the shot.

What is going on with the difference in behavior of these two methods? Is there any way to apply the playback speed to a series of clips so I do not have to deal with how the clip seems to roll over on itself (for a lack of a better way to call what the clips do when trimming a clip that has the velocity changes vs. playback speed.

    Thanks for the help

Excalibur will adjust either the Velocity or the Playback Rate. It can handle either method. Both have their uses. If you don’t need to vary the speed over time, I typically use the Playback Rate (usually by CTRL-Resizing the clip). If I need the speed to vary over time, I use the Velocity Envelope.

With Ctrl/Drag you are defining how long it takes to play back a complete video event, so you are not changing the start and end points of the video.

Velocity envelopes change how fast the video plays within the duration of the event on the timeline. So if you speed up the video, it will use video frames that are past the defined out point you start with, or if there is no more video, will start again from the beginning.

Gary and ED, Thanks for clearing that one up. Now that I understand I can see why the video rolls over – so for me playback is the best way to go for what I do.

Ed, I do feel like somewhat of an idiot now that i realized that i was pulling up the old Excalibur 3 – I see that playback rate in 5.

    Thanks again

To be honest, I recommend uninstalling older version once you start using newer ones. It helps eliminate confusion but also helps prevent some other known issues in Vegas.
