    Hi All,

My workflow is to bring MiniDV source into Vegas 6 via firewire from the Sony deck. The source video is typically shot on a Sony PD-150. I’ve had many hours of experience with Vegas, but this particular issue still confounds me a bit.

Edges of a subject with a fair amount of contrast seems disturbingly sharp. This seems pretty common to DV in general. I always add some “quick blur” to my titles as a rule, and have done this to the entire video for test purposes. It does soften the edges, but results in an overall detail loss as well.

Is there a better way out there to address this? I wonder if it’s more a function of the codec, than the DV itself. Or it could be the a function of the Sony camera. Hard to say there, as Sony DV cams are all I’ve ever owned.

I’ve seen many DV productions out there that look so filmlike, it’s amazing. For example, the film “November” from 1993 is pretty amazing. I’m well aware of exposure issues, and a safe color gamut, but I’d really like to know what different I might try here.

Thanks for any thoughts on this

On my PD150s and DSR250 I lower the sharpness by 1 click to the left in the custom preset menu. It seems to have helped take “the edge off” a bit. With my JVC5000 I’ve not had to do that. seems it might be more of a camera thing.
