speed in AE
Hi all….
I hope somebody will be able to help me… I have a MAC PRO dual core intel xenon. Before i have 4GB of RAM memory and was quite ok. But i got footage from redcam in 2K quality and i didn’t have enough RAM memory to do a ram preview. Then i bought another 16GB RAM memory and now i have installed 19GB. After installing, all the previews are slower and even an old project with standard SD quality that is doing the kind of ITUNES pictures flow effect is going much slower and only shows 3 seconds of RAM preview… Was trying to cache memory, to make multiprocessing… Nothing works and is almost impossible to work with AE cause takes ages to make a preview on standard project…
Any help you may think about it?

you seem to have plenty of ram to get ae to work efficiently. you didn’t say which version of ae you have, i’ll assume you have cs3 or cs4 (if you have version 7 or earlier, you’ll have problems on an intel mac no matter how much ram you have).
go to preferences>multiprocessing, make sure that multiprocessing is enabled.
then go to preferences>memory & cache, try setting the max memory usage to 100-120% (120% is the default) and set the max ram cache to 60-67% (60% is the default). and, for now, disable the disk cache (the disk cache can cause performance problems if it is using the same drive bus that you keep your media on).
note that 2k frames are very large, and even with 2gb for the ram cache, you will not be able to hold a lot of frames in ram so your previews will not be too long. using the resolution/down sample pulldown setting eill allow you to render more of the preview to ram… e.g. if you set the setting to ‘half’ it will render twice as many frames to ram.
you can also use the time controls to set the ram preview to ‘skip’ frames which will allow you to fit a longer duration in ram.
there is also a feature called ‘region of interest’ that allows you to section of just a portion of the comp to preview and can greatly reduce the amount of ram that a preview needs by only rendering a small section. it’s great if you are only focusing on a small area.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks a lot for your answer. I will try tomorrow morning your suggestions but what is really confusing me is that AE projects (i have CS3) that before was having enough memory with 4GB to RAm preview the all project sequence now only make also maximum 7 seconds…. Is a 15 seconds composition with standard SD settings and making a itunes animation of pictures making the flow itunes effect….

you might also want to make sure that you installed all the ram correctly. the macpros have a rather specific way to install the ram to get the best performance (and even to get it to recognize all the ram).
if you go the apple menu>about this mac, click more info and select memory from the hardware list, you should see all the ram slots on your mac. make sure you can see all the ram you have installed. if you don’t see all of it or if any of them are red, then there is a problem.
i’ll make a few assumptions about your ram config: the original ram was 2 x 3gb sticks (4gb total), and the new ram is 4 x 4gb sticks (total 16gb). all combined you have 20gb.
if that is correct, the installed configuration for what i think you have should look something like this:
DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1 4gb (new)
DIMM Riser A/DIMM 2 4gb (new)
DIMM Riser A/DIMM 3 2gb (original ram)
DIMM Riser A/DIMM 4 2gb (original ram)
DIMM Riser B/DIMM 1 4gb (new)
DIMM Riser B/DIMM 2 4gb (new)
DIMM Riser B/DIMM 3 empty
DIMM Riser B/DIMM 4 emptyyour original ram was probably installed in slot 1 on both risers. when adding more ram, that original ram needs to be grouped together on the same riser and since the ram is a different size than the new ram, you’ll want to place it in slots 3 & 4. this will allow the new ram, which is all the same size, to be grouped in slots 1 & 2 of both risers and take full advantage of the interleaving between risers a & b.
if you think you’re having problems with the installation of the ram, give me the exact specs of your ram (both original and new) and i’ll give your the proper installation configuration.

My RAM are: 4 x 4GB each (all of them new)
2 x 1 GB each (1st ampliation i made few time ago)
2 x 512 MB each (original i have another 2x512MB that cannot use anymore cause no more space for it)By now i have: the 4x4GB each in raiser A
2x1GB and 2x 512MB in raiser B -

2x1GB and 2x 512MB in raiser B”this may be part of the problem you’re having. try splitting the 4x4gb onto separate risers so the configuration would look like this:
DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1 4gb (new)
DIMM Riser A/DIMM 2 4gb (new)
DIMM Riser A/DIMM 3 1gb
DIMM Riser A/DIMM 4 1gb
DIMM Riser B/DIMM 1 4gb (new)
DIMM Riser B/DIMM 2 4gb (new)
DIMM Riser B/DIMM 3 512mb
DIMM Riser B/DIMM 4 512mbif you are still having performance problems, try removing the 2x1gb and 2x512mb sticks and see how it does with just the new 16gb of ram… i have heard that having all the same size ram can help performance, however, i have 6x2gb and 2x1gb sticks and didn’t notice any difference in performance with or without the original 2x1gb sticks.

When i received the 4x4GB RAM i was installing them 2x4GB in each riser (and without the previous RAM 1GB and 512 MB), but i don’t know for what strange reason, MACPRO was only reading the A raiser 2x4GB and appear the B raiser like empty.I will try tomorrow again and see what happens….

Ok…… Thanks very much to all of you for your support and specially to Kevin…
So i made your suggestion with the riser and now computer rode then perfectly. But also i had a problem that didn’t saw before and is that in preferences, at RAM percent i had only 305 MB….. So i increased to 67% (2GB) and my AE is back to his normal working speed…
