    Hello,

    I would appreciate your help with the following scenario. I am in the USA. I need to produce programs that will be broadcasted to Europe and sometimes to the USA. I will be using Vegas 6.0.

    My questions are:

    What are the settings for the camera? What’s the appropriate Camera? Shall I use PAL camera and record at 50i? Or shall I use 24P? or shall I use 60i?

    Now, when capturing the data to Vegas, what would vegas setting be? 24P? 50i? 60i?

    And finally, how can I output this to Europe 50i? and then to USA 60i? Can vegas handle this? Will Vegas handle the audio compression? or do I need to export the audio, compress or uncompress it 4% then reexport the audio?

    I have already invested in Vegas. My hope that I shoot once, edit once, and output twice to two different formats. I already setup Vegas workstation. But I have not bought a camera yet. I was thinking of the Panasonic DVX100B verses Sony Z1 (sony support 50i and 60i).

    One more question if I am greedy… what if I decided to take this programs I am producing and produce a DVD, one for USA and one for Europe? What format will I use? Thanks

    I would be very thankful if somebody would help me with this. If my questions seem so naive, I would appreciate any links to read about this. Thanks.

    I assume from your choice of cameras that you will be shooting in SD and not HDV?

    Vegas can convert between NTSC and PAL with no problem. If you are doing a significant amount of work for European consumption, a PAL camera would be a good choice since NTSC converted from PAL looks better than the other way around.

    When you capture your footage, the system and frame rate are automatically detected and do not have to be set.

    If you are producing DVDs for both markets, then NTSC is the better bet, as European DVD players and TVs generally handle NTSC OK, but egocentric Americans don’t create a market for DVD players that handle PAL.

    … The sony Z1u may be your best choice as far as options on formats and frame rates as well as moving into HDV in the future.

    Thank you very much. You are correct. I won’t be using HDV but DV.

    If I will be using PAL camera, should I be using 50i or 25P? Also if I used DVX100a with 24p, won’t that convert nicely to 50i at the end?

    i’ve been consulting on a NTSC & PAL project.
    the persons in US are shooting NTSC and the persons in europe are shooting PAL. it is being funded & edited in USA. they are planning a film out.
    they also have allot of achival clips from vhs, 1 inch, 3/4, betaSP..

    the project is being shot on several formats. betaSP, sony 500 16×9, digibeta, and some b roll dvx100 60i ( not 24p) where they cannot get a larger camera in … also they just started using the sony HDV camera as b roll and for some interviews.. we also just tested the HVX 200 for green screen and ?? well they’ll stick to digibeta for those shots … but will make use of HVX for other shots …

    based on all our different formats we decided on 50i & 60i …
    right now it is being edited NTSC BUT the final render could go either way … as of now there is still another 2 weeks of shooting in MAY .. which ever format (pal/ntsc) has the most minutes in the TL will be the format it will be rendered out to ( based on discussions with tape to film houses back in fall 2004 – things could change when we finalize arrangements with them in fall ..

    That’s interesting. I can ask you million questions…

    why did you choose 50i and 60i? Why not 24p and 25p?

    Why the HVX200 was not used for green screen shots?

    50i & 60i converts to any fps with good results ..
    at the time the project was started the dvx100 ( IMO the best SD hand size camera) was outperformed by 2/3″ camera’s … the pansonic 900 was a excellent performer but none of our cameraman own it. when we looked at where we could rent the camera in usa & europe add the cost of getting it to the europe cameraman = bottom line $$$ .. all the archive tapes are interlace …

    the HVX greenscreen test .. we were some seeng weired artifacts . which may or may not be from the vertical/horizontal pixel shift?? yea you could add a little hor/vert blur to help but it took allot of work to get a clean matte as compared to digibeta which was very easy . bottom line the digibeta produced better chroma keying results.. chroma key was tested with AE6.5, combustion 4, ultra 2.

    every project is different .. again at the time fall 2004 we looked at what was widely available, all the formats we would be working with & archive clip rights are not cheap ,500K budget ( not including post).. the final decision was not mine. i would NOT have choosen to shoot any interviews/shots using betaSP 4×3. i recommended shooting all interviews 16×9 and in USA use the panasonic 900 24pA. for europe shooting 16×9 PAL on sony 500 16×9 or better camera …

    if the project was just starting today then HD would have to be considered …

    Thank you very much for the info. What do you think of Sony Z1U? I would like to use it for green screen shots as well.
