Firewire for new computer
I’m planning on building a computer for video editing – sometime next year. For purposes of downloading video from my camcorder – is it ok to go with the firewire hookup to the motherboard, or is it better to get a firewire card? In terms of cards, I was thinking about the Canopus 1394 card, though it is no longer on their website. If I go the card route, what’s the best for downloading video?

I have bought an ASUS p4p800-e deluxe (+ P4 -3Ghz HT, 1 GB RAM)
not so long ago.
Very good board.
It has a FW onboard, but built from a via vt6307.I can say, it’s a piece of shit.
Lot’s of dropped frmaes, almost ecery second-third frame
is dropped.So I kept my old pyro basic dv with the ti chip.
If you get a board with FW onboard, look for the chip
which implemets the function.
Usually they use the via chip, I’v seen som GigaByte
boards which had ti chip onboard.By(t)e

I have found that with most onboard firewire, you can encounter problems (not seeing camera or external device).
It would be in your best interest to get a PCI firewire card. They vary in price but I use a fairly ‘cheap and nasty’ 1394 card and have never had hassles on any of the machines i have built for myself or others.

I have a Soyo Platinum II MoBo with built in firewire and had worked flawlessly for well over a year until I installed a Canopus ACEDVio card. The only reason the onboard card doesn’t work now is because the Canopus card took control of the IRQ which it shares with the onboard card. The onboard card uses the Via chipset but it always worked great…but I have read in the past that Via firewire chipsets are known to cause problems. I guess I was one of the lucky ones.

Well this is interesting news! I have an Asus P4 G800 E Deluxe here on one machine, similar board, and have used it for over two years with the onboard 1394 and it has never dropped one frame in that entire time. So I wouldn’t go making sweeping statements about certain things being s**t when there are quite a few people using the onboard Asus firewire connector without problems. That may be the problem in your case but you do a disservice to forum users by making broad sweeping statement based on your experience only. I would suggest by all means make suggestions but I think you are off target stating that the TI chip is the only one that works when that statement is patently untrue.

Sorry for beeing a bit extreme, but
when I choosed my new board (that asus p4p800e-deluxe)
my decision was based on the extras, important was the raid
controller, and I was extremly happy to have an onboard firewire.Maybe I expected too much, so the onboard fw. made me so much
disappointed.On the other side however I’m completely satisfied with this board,
(except the fw.).This is wy I placed my old fw. card into the new machine.
Please forgive me, I can’t afford to buy hundreds of mainboards
and firewire controllers to make correct representaive sampling,
and gather right statistical data, which works, which does not.You’re right, one sample is not enough, I made the mistake, to make
a conclusion on one statistical sample.
I apologize for this mistake, a disservice to forum is one of the things I want most to avoid.But Chris, be honest:
If you buy a new car (let’s say a BMW) and you’d disappointed with it,
would you buy other three ones to see if all of them are bad?
Or would you like to chose another type next time (let’s say a Toyota)?
Would you recommend it to your friends or not?Again, I apoligize for being extreme.

Not a major problem, it was just a friendly word of caution. It’s just that I am
very sceptical over judgements made over one example, especially on forums
where we are all trying to help one another and especially when it comes to
spending ones hard earned dollars wisely as is the case for most of us. As
you say, I am sure there aren’t many of us who can throw money around so all
of us should make sure our advice is well balanced.Chris Young
