External SATA drive
Posted by Rc on October 30, 2005 at 10:16 pmWould an external SATA drive (with pci card controller) give better performance for capture than firewire or usb2? Computer is AMD 64 x 2 4200.
Thanks in advance.Rc replied 20 years, 6 months ago 3 Members · 4 Replies -

October 30, 2005 at 11:32 pmWhat are you capturing? If DV, then firewire/usb2 is quite sufficient.

October 31, 2005 at 2:34 pmThanks, Gary. Capturing DV, but when looking for external drives I noticed the external SATA drive kit for about the same money and was intrigued. Anyone tried one yet?

October 31, 2005 at 9:59 pmI actually have an external enclosure that holds 2 SATA drives that I RAID0’d together. I used two open channels from my 8 channel Raid controller card and they have almost the same speed as my 4 disk RAID 5 Array. Plenty of speed to play multiple streams of uncompressed SD video.
And yes, a single drive will also be much faster then a Firewire or USB2 external. -

Nice work on your site, by the way.
