Variable Speed
Have 1 gig of ram,—which I understand is sufficient for video editing.
Sometimes machine runs great.
Other times,—like a turtle.
Sorry,—not a computer guy.
So easily baffled.
Any thoughts on why this machine runs hot and cold, fast and slow.
Have reinstalled entire system recently,—-but problem persists. -

Peabody–Some more info on the situation is needed here. WHEN is the PC slowing down–what apps are running, etc. Also, IMHO, 1 gig of ram is NOT sufficient to render video. Give me the specs on your machine-cpu, hdd’s, are you running a RAID configuration, and maybe I can help you figure this thing out.

P4 3.00 Ghz, 3.01 Ghz 1.00 GB of RAM.
System is RAID configured.
C drive 80 GB
E drive 250 RAIDED
F and G are swappable 180 abd 250 respetively.
Notice system grind down when I open more than one instance of Vegas.
Seen various error messages including “low memory”.What IS sufficient IYO to render video? 2.0 GB,—more?

Well… opening more than one instance requires more resource than a single instance. Are you rendering in one instance while working in the second? If yes, the disk access could be the culprit. As for rendering, it does not take that much memory for a normal render. However, there were some memory issues when using large photos which was improved in 6.0c.

Here are a couple of suggestions. I appologize if this gets a little technical. Make sure your page file(virtual Memory) is on a different physical hard drive than the one Vegas and your OS are on. Also Set the minium(sp.) and maxinum size to the same value, usually 1 1/2 to 2 times your physical RAM. Virtual Memory settings are found in Control Panel/system/hardware/advanced. you’ll have to re-boot after you change it. It might prompt you that windows can not create a memory dump file if there is no paging file on the c: drive. This is not usually an issue, Microsoft and programmers are usually the only people who look at that. If you are concerned about this make an 8 MB(Min and Max) page file on the c: drive. Hope this helps.
