Vegas or Premiere 1.5 PRO???
Posted by J-p Desrochers on September 1, 2005 at 7:19 pmHi.
I’m about to start using (& keeping) one of those two
video editors & I heard lots of good and bad points
about both editing softs…
The strong & weak points for both editors
would be welcome.
The learning curve/time doesn’t matter
for both softs.
Your opinions will help me make my mind.
Thank you.

September 2, 2005 at 3:41 pmI don’t have an answer but I do have a somewhat related question. 🙂 I recently tried both Premiere Pro and Vegas 6 demos and naturally found things I liked and disliked in both of them. Compositing layers in Vegas is more flexible and powerful BUT it all seems very track based rather than clip based. IOW, doing a series of PIP’s would require a number of different tracks if the various clips were to be positioned/sized differently throughout the program. I found that Vegas did have clip based controls for cropping but none for resizing and positioning. Did I overlook something in this area? Premiere did seem to be simpler to work with for such things but also more limited. My demos expired so I never could investigate more. 🙂 My final impression comparing the two was that Premiere Pro was basically quicker and easier to use(considering my mindset and preferred way of doing things) but Vegas was much more powerful overall. This is based on only a few hours of using both(used Premiere4 years ago but I still see some things, such as most transitions have minimal configurability, haven’t really progressed that much. Many things have though.

Actually, you can do them all on ONE track. Just use keyframes on that track to change the various sizes/locations for the PIPs as needed.
Pan/Crop can also create PIPs but it works backward to Track Motion. Open the Pan/Crop window and may the “F” area LARGER which will make the image smaller. Then you can move the “F” area around to position it.

September 4, 2005 at 3:21 pmThanks for the reply. It seemed like there did have to be a way that I just wasn’t aware of since it is such a common thing to do(at least for me). I have to admit that I much prefer doing such things on a clip by clip basis but that’s to be expected since I’ve been working that way for years(using Velocity). Old habits and all that. 🙂 I can see the advantage of doing things track based though for some/many situations.
