  • Help !! Is there a standard fade in/out for broadcast commercial????

I’m producing a :60 commercial spot for broadcast. Is there a standard fade in/out to black? How much of the 60 seconds do I really get to use?

    Thanks,
    Mike

Any spot I’ve ever done for broadcast used the entire time and then some.

To explain further. I start the spot 15 frames early. No audio and the video is an extra 1/2 sec. before the 00:00 mark. At the end of the spot, I let the video run for an extra second or two at the end as well.
Why do I do this? While most larger stations are automated and have the clips on hard drives somewhere, a lot of small market stations still rely on someone pushing the right button at the right time. By having that extra little bit of video on the head and tail, you won’t see any black between spots. And if your spot gets an extra second or two of air time, so be it 🙂

The station I deal with prefers a few seconds of black (not blank) before the commercial begins and run 1/2 second short of the full time. I had 3 seconds of black at the end of the commercial as well. Your commercial probably should be 59.5 seconds. They also request a slate with my name and contact number. Even though they can use my commercial without all the extras I do it because they prefer it. You should just give them a call and ask what they prefer. The station takes care of fades, etc.
