I do a lot of video assist on film sets.. I have one client who has about 8 months of work shooting on HD (varicam, i think).. I currently use Vegas to capture all my video assist footage via DV through the firewire port on my notebook computer.. It works great, and I can even assemble quick timelines right on the set and playback everything in real-time to all the monitors.. Is there a way I can do the same with HD resolution? I know I can capture HDV via firewire, but I can’t play back the clips to monitors in real-time (unless compressed, which I wouldn’t have time for).. Basically, I want the same easy and quick functionality of Vegas with DV now, but at HD resolution.. Possible? Other software/hardware? I might be willing to get Sony’s HDV deck to capture/playback HD res clips while on set.. Even though it doesn’t have component in, at least I’d be at HD res so the client can watch playback on HD monitors..

There are a couple of things you could do. Do you need to playback in HD? If not, you can quickly assemble clips without reencoding with Womble – even m2t files and play back quickly. You can get a trial version at womble.com

HDV Rack will playback but ONLY quickly with a real fast processor notebook.
