DVD images stretched vertically
Greetings,
I just got off the phone with tech support at Sony and I am still just as confused as before. I commonly render 720 by 480 animation mpg2s which I make into DVDs. Trouble is, when I go to DVD, I get a vertical “stretch” in the image. The proportions of the image on the screen are greater in the vertical. The tech guy says this has nothing to do with the fact that 720 by 480 is a 3:2 ratio and letterbox is a 4:3 ratio because aspect ratio is a different measure than this “pixel ratio” of 720 by 480. I’ve heard this before and I believe him but I don’t understand him. When I render things at 720 by 480 I always get the same dimensions so they must somehow translate into image proportions. And when I make letterbox DVDs, I get different proportions.
So I have two questions:
First of all, how can I make sure my DVD proportions are the same as the ones in the mpg2, understanding that I would need some black at the top and the bottom of the image to preserve the 720 by 480 proportions?
Secondly, can someone help me to understand the relationship between pixel proportions and image proportions? I know there are different pixel aspect ratios which will leave black on the top and bottom of the screen and tend to scrunch or stretch images. I get this difference importing Poser square pixel AVIs into Vegas which is default set to a differet par. To make things look right, I unchoose the “preserve aspect ratio” menu item and the image fills the window.
Anyway, any help towards my enlightenment would be much appreciated!!!
