I just built a new video editing computer for our church and will be ordering Vegas 6+DVD for it. I installed an Intel P4 3.0E prescott processor in the machine with 1 gig Corsair XMS duel channel memory. The machine I use here at home has a P4 2.8C processor and it normally runs about 40-42 degrees C. This new Prescott 3.0 processor is running at 48-50 degrees C at idle. I have heard that the prescott processors run hotter than others, but just wanted to see if any of you guys and gals are running this processor and what kind of temps it’s running at. 50 degrees C seems a little hot at idle, I’m not sure what the temp will go to while rendering video. I removed all of the stock thermal paste from the heatsink and applied Arctic Silver #5 as I do with all my processor installs. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

According to Tom’s Hardware, the Prescott does indeed run hot, and needs a good cooler to keep it under 60C when under load. See their recent cooler tests for some suggestions on aftermarket units that outperform the stock heatsinks and fans.

Thanks Doug, according to Intel’s website the specs on this processor indicates a “thermal spec” of 69.1 C. I’m not sure if this is the “shut down” temp or what. I’ll check out Tom’s Hardware. Thanks for the tip.
