Dealing with 863×480 QT for DVD
Hi all,
I have a QT file encoded with H.264 with dimensions of 863×480. Adobe Encore does not recognize this dimension as something it can handle, so I want to resize it to the standard 720×480 so Encore will take it.
I’ve tried this two ways in AE:
1) Create a comp with 720×480 dimension @ 1.2 pixel aspect ratio, then place my QT in that comp. It fits exactly. Render to uncompressed QT.
2) Create a comp with 720×480 dimension @ 0.9 pixel aspect ration, place my QT in that comp, then scale the video to fit. Render.
Both of these methods result in horrible ‘jaggie’ artifacts that do not exist in the original QT file. Clearly I’m doing something wrong, but I have no idea what.
Anybody?

Hey Dave,
I’m not sure what you’d make of this, but for widescreen work I usually render out from AE to 856×480, and let my DVD app make the widescreen disc from this file (or pass it to an editor for use).
The reason I do this is to avoid the horizontal stretching widescreen DV uses, which I have found effectively lowers the overall resolution of the file. I have definitely noticed an improvement in widescreen quality since I started doing this, but do you know of any potentially negative side effects?
