The best graphicboard for particle illusion
Posted by Janoschy on October 10, 2005 at 6:51 pmHello to all,
i need a good graphikboard for PI. Dont shure that the quadro FX 3400 is a good card for this job.
I have seen that the GF 7800GTX 256MB PCIE is less expensive than the quadro.
I like to play with the card games like doom3 too. Do you have a better idea for a good
graphicboard? What is the best?Janosch
PS: Sorry for my english.

October 10, 2005 at 10:46 pmpersonally I’ve had a lot of luck with nVidea Cards. I’ve heard ALan say that cards geared more towards gaming instead of 3D animation and design are better suited to pIllusion. Again, nVideo cards have worked for well for me, wether for gaming or 3D design.
The more on board RAM you have on your Open GL card, the better/faster pIllusion will run.

October 11, 2005 at 9:27 amBut if i like to work with big projekts (many particle emitters, big stage size), which solution would be better:
1) 2 x 7800GTX working together in SLI technic (800 $)
or
2) 1 x Quadro FX3400 (1200$)Could not find any Information about the performances on PI-Website.
The Benchmark results are very old.Thanx

October 11, 2005 at 1:32 pmI honestly don’t know. I’d venture to guess you wood have good performance on either, but I can’t say which is better.
Alan, any thoughts?

October 11, 2005 at 2:38 pmI honestly do not know which is better for pIllusion. The fastest card I have is the GeForce GO 6800, and it’s quite good for pI3. The 2 solutions you mentioned are even faster (I think), so I doubt you’ll be disappointed with either.
A few years back I was seeing better performance from “game-level” cards than I was from the expensive DCC cards, but I don’t think that’s an issue any more.
I do know that any card that has excellent performance with games will have excellent performance with pI3 though. I personally wouldn’t spend $1200 on a card just for pI3. If you have other DCC apps that would benefit, then yes, but for only pI3 those cards are probably overkill.
Alan.
