  Sony J-1 BetaSP Deck – Vertical Hold / Black and White Image Issues

  Hi There,

  I have a Sony J-1 BetaSP deck with some issues. Recently the picture has gone to black and white, with some vertical hold issues (see attached picture).

  This displays on all outputs – S-Video, Composite, SDI.

  I’ve attempted to clean the heads with no change.

  I’m hoping this can be resolved with a possible menu / settings change, and isn’t a more serious issue.

  Haven’t had hands on a Beta deck for years, so kind of just guessing here. Looks like it’s expecting external reference. Either connect a sync/blackburst generator or find the menu setting for “internal” reference. Could also be that it’s in an Edit mode.

  Some how you are getting the luminance with out the chrominance.

  Probably too obvious, but any changes in the cabling or connection to the rest of the system? And you’ve played a “known good” tape in it?
