  Can I use a CRT computer monitor as a reference monitor?

  I work for a local Ad Agency and edit all our commercials on a MacBook Pro. It irks me that I don’t get a better idea for what my video is going to look like on TV until I see the spot broadcasted. I have an old Dell CRT monitor laying around at home, if I used this to run dual monitors could it be used as a reference monitor? Thanks in advance for the help!

  You need a VIDEO monitor, not a computer display. And you need to feed it a VIDEO signal. For a laptop, if you have the Express34 slot, your options are the MXO2 line or the AJA IO Express. If you don’t, the only firewire options are the AJA IOHD and the MOTU V4HD.

  No. The difference between computer CRTs and video CRTs is even more pronounced than the difference between computer LCDs and video LCDs. The big problem/difference is the gamma curve which is dramatically different between video and computer displays.
