  Beta SP

  So our refurbed 2800 is showing signs of fatigue.
  Aside from yet another costly repair, would a hybrid deck capable of playing SP be an option? We have way too much archived to this format to just chuck it and the only other deck we have for laying to tape is a DSR-11.

  Is MPEG IMX still a value as we usually have a request to lay to tape for playback at a conference, event or even PR firms?
  We aren’t a Sony house we shoot mostly to P2/hard drive in DVCPROHD format just happened to get this deck at a great deal.

  Any thoughts/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  I have never delivered on IMX for a conference or event — or even seen an IMX deck on-site. In my experience, live events tend toward digital delivery or Beta SP, with occasional DVCAM, HDCAM, DVCPRO HD, and XDCAM.

  I thought IMX was Sony’s format for news that never really got traction. BetaSP will be with us for a lot longer than most people predict. We deliver spots to a dozen local broadcasters and cable companies. Right now 4 of them accept HD the others all want BetaSP for delivery. The good news is that used BetaSP decks are relatively cheap these days.
