  422 cable length

  Hi,
  I have to install a 422/9-pin cable between my two machine rooms. What would be the maximum length I could use? I think I have 150 feet between both patchbays.

  Do you know where I could find a wiring diagram for that purpose because I will have to make the cables myself.

  One thousand feet. 150′ is NOTHING for RS422 transmission.

  This is the wiring diagram – you need 2 9 pin Male D connectors.
  You will wire them PIN TO PIN –
  1 — 1
  2 — 2
  3 — 3
  4 — 4
  5 — 5 (5 is not used)
  6 — 6
  7 — 7
  8 — 8
  9 — 9

  Hope you are good with a soldering iron. The easier way is to get a CAT 5 cable, and RJ45-9 pin male adaptors.

  If you are running digital video 150′, if you don’t use good video cable (like Belden 1505A, Gepco VPM-2000 or Canare L-4CFB), your SDI or HD-SDI video signals will never make that distance (if you use cheap crap old RG-59 video cable).

  Thanks, it went pretty well. I only damaged one connector before I got it right. Both the SRW-5500 and DVW work fine on 160 feet of RS-422 to the offline station on the other side of the building.

  I also installed a 3G ready AVP patchbay. All that’s left to install is a RJ-45 patchbay to send the vectorscope/waveform VGA monitor output to the online rooms. I bought 6 eight inch iKan monitors. They work very well for that purpose.

  Isn’t AVP an amazing company. They are not well known in the US, and it’s a little tough to get distribution (compared to ADC and Canare), but their patch bays are FANTASTIC (I like them much better than ADC).
