My station is in the process of acquiring new cameras for our studio and (finally) field productions. Our current set up is 4 SD EFP cameras in a studio configuration. We’ve purchased 3 new HD cameras for studio use only. We would like to buy 1-2 HD EFP cameras that could be used as back-up studio cameras, i.e. have HD-SDI output.

Our budget is limited so we’ll be looking at cameras probably in the $7k-10k range.

I’ve used the Canon XL-H1 previously and know that works well in a studio config. My big qualm with that camera, or any HDV camera, is how to ingest the video to our editor (will be FCP by the time new cameras arrive). What about other cameras such as the Sony EX1 or EX3?

    Any suggestions?

JVC has a studio configuration for their 250 line of cameras. They are also HDV, but you can dock a hard drive on the back for recording as well.
